The First Battle of Boonville was fought on June 17, 1861 and lasted only 20 minutes with three guardsman and five federal soldiers losing their lives. Victory, and control of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, went to Gen. Nathaniel Lyon (US) as Col. J.S. Marmaduke of the Missouri State Guard (MSG) retreated, failing to drive US Federal forces from Missouri. Lyon's victory made sure hopes for Missouri's secession weakened and Missouri's resources of food and volunteers would not aid the Confederacy.
