During the 1860s, Missouri was divided between pro-Union and pro-Secessionist supporters and Gov. Claiborne F. Jackson wanted to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.

The First Battle of Boonville was fought on June 17, 1861 and lasted only 20 minutes with three guardsman and five federal soldiers losing their lives.
