On June 9, 1861, Col. Franz Sigel's German-speaking troops, recruited from St. Louis, were ordered to march from Rolla to Springfield to round up southern sympathizers. Arriving on June 24, 1861, they were the first Union troops to occupy Springfield during the Civil War.
